Grammy-winning R&B star SZA says a painful health setback forced her to slow down and focus on recovery before her 36th birthday.

The singer recently revealed she suffered two herniated discs in her neck, an injury that led her to step away from her normal routine. The condition eventually prompted her to spend time at a meditation retreat focused on healing and reflection.

SZA, born Solána Imani Rowe, has been open about personal challenges throughout her career. The chart-topping artist behind hits such as “Kill Bill” and “Snooze” often uses interviews and music to discuss physical and emotional struggles.

Her latest revelation adds another chapter to that candid narrative.

Recovery Through Retreat

According to interviews, SZA sought relief after doctors diagnosed two herniated discs in her neck. The injury caused significant discomfort and limited mobility.

She said the experience led her to travel to an ashram, where she spent about a month focusing on meditation and yoga while recovering.

The singer described the retreat as a transformative period that forced her to rest and reconsider her lifestyle.

“I spent 30 days at an ashram,” she said while reflecting on the experience.

SZA explained that the retreat centered on mindfulness practices rather than traditional entertainment or distractions. The setting emphasized meditation, yoga and quiet reflection.

The injury, she said, made that pause necessary.

A herniated disc occurs when part of a spinal disc pushes through its outer layer, often causing pain, numbness or weakness. Neck injuries can be especially disruptive for performers who travel and perform frequently.

For a touring artist, the physical strain of constant movement can intensify such issues.

Balancing Health and a Demanding Career

Despite the injury, SZA continues to maintain a prominent place in contemporary R&B. Her 2022 album “SOS” dominated charts and streaming platforms, becoming one of the decade’s most successful R&B releases.

The project produced multiple hit singles and helped solidify SZA as one of the most influential voices in modern R&B.

Still, the singer has increasingly spoken about the pressures that come with global success.

She has previously discussed mental health struggles, industry stress and the challenge of maintaining personal well-being while pursuing music.

Her comments about the neck injury reflect that broader theme.

In interviews, SZA often emphasizes the importance of stepping back when necessary. The ashram retreat, she suggested, allowed her to reconnect with herself during a difficult physical moment.

The experience also reinforced her interest in spirituality and wellness practices, which have become a recurring part of her life.
