Former NBA guard Patrick Beverley was arrested Friday and charged with a felony in a case that authorities describe as “family violence.” The 37-year-old is accused of choking and punching his 15-year-old sister, according to a probable cause affidavit. Bail was set at $40,000.

Allegations from the Probable Cause Affidavit

The court document states that Beverley confronted his teenage sister after she returned home late following a visit with her 18-year-old boyfriend. According to the affidavit, Beverley allegedly grabbed her “by her neck with both hands” and lifted her off the ground.

His sister further alleges that he squeezed her neck for about 20 to 30 seconds, causing her to feel she was “losing oxygen and not able to breathe.” She claims he slammed her against walls while still holding her by the neck. The documents say that he later laid her on a sofa, stood over her, and “punched her approximately one time on her left eye with a closed fist.”

Worse still, the teenager allegedly said Beverley told her, “he will be the family relative to kill her.” After the incident, the affidavit says, he followed her boyfriend out of the house.

Deputies who responded to the scene noted visible markings on the girl’s neck and petechiae — tiny red spots — in the whites of her eyes, which can be a sign of strangulation.

In response to the arrest, Beverley took to social media, urging: “Please don’t believe everything you see on the internet.” He shared an unsigned statement, reportedly from his attorney. The message read in part:

“Patrick Beverley has no criminal record. He cares deeply about his little sister — a young lady, a minor. Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court.”

His attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, strongly disputes the chain of events as presented. She said the affidavit was filed under “emotional stress” and doesn’t reflect all sides. She called Beverley “not a violent man” and asked the public to withhold judgment.

Beverley also posted a separate message on X saying, “Y’all pray for the fam.”

Beverley played 12 seasons in the NBA for teams including the Rockets, Clippers, Timberwolves, Lakers, Bulls, 76ers, and Bucks. He most recently played overseas before his arrest.

He has been charged with a third-degree felony — assault on a family or household member for impeding breathing or circulation under Texas law. If convicted, he could face between two and 10 years in prison.

A court appearance has been scheduled for Dec. 15 in Fort Bend County.
