Puple Rain is headed to Broadway.
It’s been 40 years since the release of Purple Rain, the film by Prince and its accompanying album. According to reports, the movie is bound for the stage, intended for a Broadway run.
Broadway producer Orin Wolf formally made the announcement today. While Wolf didn’t mention Broadway specifically, instead he said the project is being developed for the stage, leaving readers to assume it must mean Broadway considering the high profile individuals involved.
The the musical will be directed by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz, who recently helmed Lincoln Center’s revival of The Skin of Our Teeth. Pulitzer finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, whose play Appropriate is enjoying success on Broadway, will provide an accompanying book.
“It’s been almost 40 years since Prince’s legendary film, Purple Rain, took the world by storm and we can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to honor Prince and the Purple Rain legacy with this stage adaptation of the beloved story,” said L Londell McMillan, Chairman of The NorthStar Group, and Larry Mestel, Founder & CEO of Primary Wave Music, in a joint statement. “We are thrilled with our Broadway partners and creative team, who are bringing a theatricality to the film’s original fictional story.”
Further details regarding the stage adaptation, including venue and date when the show will open, have not yet been released.
