JCPenney, the staple American department store chain, is bidding farewell to their customers and employees to seven locations.

Founded in 1902, the official closures come nearly four months after JCPenney confirmed in a February statement that it would close a “handful” of locations by mid-year.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in May 2020 after the pandemic-induced temporary closing of stores put the already struggling retailer deeper in peril. The retail giant closed over 200 of its locations in the U.S at the time.

The new closures, scheduled for May 25, will affect stores in California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina and West Virginia. Despite the bankruptcy filing, the company did not provide a reason for the shutdowns. USA Today previously reported that the store closings may be due to “expiring lease agreements, market changes or other factors.”

There are not any JCPenney stores scheduled to close in the Tri-state, as of May 25.

JCPenney isn’t the only major retailer that has announced a handful of store closures. Last year, Big Lots announced it was closing more than 300 stores across the U.S. The news came after the company announced a 10 percent sales drop, equating to about $205 million.
