Ryan Coogler’s genre-blending vampire film Sinners has once again topped the box office, earning $45 million in its second weekend. This marks only a 6% drop from its $48 million debut, an unprecedented hold for an R-rated horror film. The film’s domestic gross now stands at $122.5 million, with a global total of $161.6 million.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners” Defies Expectations with Historic Hold
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, remarked, “That’s one of the lowest second weekend holds for an overperforming wide release ever. It’s an absolute phenomenon.”
Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who open a juke joint in 1930s Mississippi, only to confront a vampiric threat. The film also features Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, and newcomer Miles Caton. Caton, encouraged by singer H.E.R. to audition, plays Sammie Moore, a preacher’s son entangled in the supernatural events.
Jordan expressed his gratitude to fans in a heartfelt video, stating, “We poured our hearts into this project, and the audience’s support means the world to us.”
Critical Acclaim and Cultural Impact
The film’s unique blend of horror, drama, and musical elements has resonated with audiences and critics alike. It has received an A CinemaScore, a rare achievement for an R-rated horror film.
Director Ryan Coogler, known for Black Panther and Creed, drew inspiration from his Oakland upbringing and Southern roots. He described Sinners as a personal project that explores themes of race, religion, and resilience.
With its strong performance, Sinners is poised to challenge box office records for original horror films. It needs to surpass $218 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing original horror film since 2019’s Us.
As the summer movie season approaches, Sinners faces competition from upcoming releases like Marvel’s Thunderbolts. However, its unique storytelling and strong word-of-mouth suggest it will continue to captivate audiences in the weeks to come.
