At Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards, Tina Knowles, mother to global icons Beyoncé and Solange, offered heartfelt parenting advice. Speaking at The Times Square EDITION in New York City, Knowles shared her reflections on raising children and her belief in the power of love and effort when it comes to motherhood.

“I feel like the teenage years are the most difficult, but it will get better,” she shared with PEOPLE on the red carpet. “You get what you put in. The more love, care, and support you give, the more you get out of it.”

Knowles, 70, who was honored alongside other celebrity moms such as Donna Kelce, Maggie Baird, and Mandy Teefey, reflected on her journey as a mother in an emotional speech during the event. Beyoncé, her eldest daughter, was in attendance and visibly moved by her mother’s words.

A Mother’s Greatest Job According to Tina Knowles

“I’ve had many careers, but the best job I’ve ever had is being a mother,” Knowles said during her speech. Knowles, who also raised singer Solange, emphasized how motherhood became her defining role. “I was somewhat rebellious as a teen and young adult, but the day I became a mother, I decided this was one thing I wouldn’t screw up.”

Knowles has played a central role in her daughters’ lives, not only as their mother but also as a guiding force in their careers. She has been a matriarchal figure to Beyoncé’s Destiny’s Child bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, and her influence has shaped the trajectory of this musical powerhouse family.

As Beyoncé listened to her mother’s words, she teared up, showcasing the deep bond between them.

Knowles’ advice to mothers facing difficult times was simple but profound: persistence and love are key. “Keep giving them your love and care,” she said, “because in the end, it always comes back.”
