A federal judge has sided with Planned Parenthood and granted their request to temporarily stop Medicaid funding cuts under Trump’s megabill.
According to reports, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani’s ruling becomes the “first known instance of a federal judge limiting enforcement of any part of the ‘big, beautiful bill’” that Trump signed into law on Friday.
Her ruling came hours after Planned Parenthood sued because of the provision that enforces a one-year ban on state Medicaid payments to health care nonprofits which received over $800,000 in federal funding in 2023 and offers abortions as well as other care.
However, Judge Talwani’s ruling still gives this administration the right to enforce the provision against other providers. Her decision came before the government responded and gave no explanation beyond a brief note stating that Planned Parenthood had “good cause” for her to intervene.
This ruling will last for two weeks and she will give another ruling on whether the injunction will be longer after the hearing on July 21. The nonprofit organization has argued that the provision singles them out with “violates its equal protection rights.” If the judge’s ruling didn’t come down, they would have been forced to make cuts.
“We’re grateful that the court acted swiftly to block this unconstitutional law attacking Planned Parenthood providers and patients,” the group said in a statement after the ruling. “Already, in states across the country, providers and health center staff have been forced to turn away patients who use Medicaid to get basic sexual and reproductive health care because President Trump and his backers in Congress passed a law to block them from going to Planned Parenthood. There are no other providers who can fill the gap if the ‘defunding’ of Planned Parenthood is allowed to stand.”
