Will Smith opens up about “finding his voice” and what led him to release new music in nearly 20 years.
During a recent interview with fellow music artist Russ, Smith spoke about the things he endured that pushed him to do music again. “It was really the first time in my life since childhood that I got the s*** kicked out of me,” he said. “You, know, I had a run of the gods. It’s like, it was really the first time experiencing what it’s like to get stomped.”
As the conversation continued, Smith spoke about his recent single “Work of Art,” featuring Russ and his son, Jaden. In particular, he spoke about the song’s perspective and what he calls the heart of the lyric, “I am a saint, but if you touch, I am a savage.”
This song is Smith’s third single of the year, following the song “Light ‘Em Up,” from the Bad Boys: Ride or Die soundtrack and the release of “You Can Make It,” which features Kanye West’s Sunday Service Choir.
Will Smith and Russ both bonded over the “trials and tribulations” that they have both experienced. Smith’s new album is expected to be released very soon. It will be his first one since his 2005 release of Lost and Found.
