A sign dedicated to the life of Emmett Till was found vandalized in Mississippi after being replaced over a month ago. The memorial sign marks the spot where Till’s body was discovered in 1955.

Co-founder Patrick Weems released a statement saying,

“The Emmett Till Interpretive Center is committed to seeing the sign replaced. We have already begun plans to replace the sign and have notified local law enforcement about the vandalism.”

According to NY Daily News, the sign has been vandalized over and over again since it went up in 2007.

“Our mission is to continue to tell the truth as it concerns the Emmett Till story,” Weems said. “We are saddened by these events but are unwavering in our commitment to truth and racial reconciliation.

Till was kidnapped and brutally murdered by two white men for whistling at a white woman while visiting his uncle in Money, Mississippi. After confessing to the murder of Till, both men were acquitted by an all-white jury.
