Black Women Rising: Tyra Banks

In honor of Black History month, Americans across the country honor African Americans’ achievements and contributions to society. And every day, we will be honoring and celebrating black women who’ve changed history.

Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks is not known for just her beautiful looks in Hollywood, but she is one of the most powerful supermodels in media today. Tyra was born in 1973 in California. At the age of 15, she started modeling while attending high school in Los Angeles. She was signed to Elite Model Management at the age of 16.

Tyra got the opportunity to model in Europe, so she moved to Milan. She then booked 25 shows at the 1991 Paris Fashion Week.

Although Tyra graced the cover of Vogue, Teen Vogue, Elle, she was the first African American woman to appear on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, GQ and Victoria’s Secret lingerie catalog.
