‘The Woman King’ Starring Viola Davis Tops Box Office Sales During Weekend Debut

Viola Davis’ latest movie, The Woman King, topped the box office during this past weekend’s debut. 

The film is based on the true life story are the Agojie warriors who fought colonizers from Europe for the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa during the 19th century. Davis spoke about this film on her Twitter page. 

“This is my magnum opus. I’ve never had a role like this before, it’s been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I can’t wait for you to experience #TheWomanKing, now playing exclusively in movie theaters.” 

According to reports, the film raked in at least $19 million domestically. It also received an A-plus CinemaScore from its audiences. The Woman King was directed by Gina-Prince Bythewood and it has a nearly all-black cast. It was based on a story by actress Maria Bello and the script was written by Dana Stevens. It also stars John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, and Lashana Lynch.
