A suspect was taken into custody after a deadly shooting on Brown University’s campus left at least two people dead and nine others wounded, according to authorities.

According to law enforcement sources and Coventry police, the suspect in custody was caught about 3:45 a.m. at a hotel in Coventry, R.I., about 28 miles south of Providence. When police detained the suspect, he possessed two guns.
“We have detained a person of interest,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said at a press conference Sunday morning. “We are lifting the shelter-in-place.”
Rhode Island law enforcement authorities said no one else is being sought in the shooting that occurred Saturday on the Ivy League campus and left two people dead and nine others injured, according to officials.
The residents of Providence can “breathe a little easier,” Smiley said.
University President Christina Paxson confirmed that 10 of the people shot were students. An additional person was injured by fragments from the gunfire, though it remains unclear whether that individual was also a student. The shooting unfolded inside the Barus & Holley building. The hub houses Brown’s School of Engineering and physics department.
Providence described the suspect as a man dressed in black. He opened fire inside a first-floor classroom before fleeing the building. Security footage reportedly shows the suspect walking away, but his face was not visible. Some witnesses believe he may have been wearing a camouflage-style mask. Authorities believe a handgun was used in the attack.
The person in custody is not a student at the university.
