Emmy-winning actor and fashion icon Billy Porter says he has not been invited back to the Met Gala since his widely praised debut in 2019, raising questions about inclusion at one of fashion’s most exclusive events.
Porter shared the revelation during a recent SiriusXM interview. He spoke candidly about his absence from the annual fundraiser, often considered the fashion industry’s biggest night.
“I haven’t been invited back since 2019,” Porter said.
He added, “I don’t go to places where I’m not welcome.”
A Memorable Debut, Then Silence
Porter made headlines at the 2019 Met Gala, arriving in a gold, winged ensemble while carried by six shirtless men. The dramatic entrance embraced the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme and became one of the evening’s defining moments.
Despite the attention, Porter said that appearance remains his only invitation. He noted that filmmaker Ryan Murphy extended that invite, not the event’s organizers.
The Met Gala, organized annually by The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, is known for its tightly controlled guest list. Invitations are overseen by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who has chaired the event for decades.
Porter expressed particular disappointment about missing recent galas, including one celebrating Black fashion. He said the theme aligned closely with his work and identity.
“I’ve earned the invitation, and it’s OK that I don’t have it,” Porter said.
Tensions and Moving Forward
Porter has previously criticized the fashion industry and Vogue. His comments included concerns about representation and decision-making within high-profile platforms.
Those tensions may have contributed to his absence, though no official explanation has been given.
Still, Porter emphasized that his career no longer depends on such validation.
“There’s a level that I’ve reached that doesn’t require validation from the outside,” he said.
The Met Gala continues to draw global attention each year. The 2026 event will follow the theme “Fashion Is Art,” with celebrity co-chairs and hundreds of high-profile guests expected.
Porter, however, appears at peace with his absence. His remarks suggest a shift in focus from industry approval to personal fulfillment.
For an artist known for challenging norms, the statement underscores his ongoing independence.
