The woman accused of firing dozens of shots at singer Rihanna’s home may be mentally unfit to stand trial, her attorney said during a tense court hearing this week.
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 35, faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Prosecutors allege she fired numerous rounds at the Beverly Hills-area property in March while the singer, her partner A$AP Rocky, and their family were inside.
No injuries were reported, though authorities said bullets struck the home, a nearby property, and a trailer on site.
Questions Over Competency
During a recent hearing, Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman raised concerns about Ortiz’s mental state. He questioned whether she is competent to understand the proceedings or assist in her defense.
The issue prompted a private discussion between attorneys and the judge. The courtroom was temporarily cleared as the matter was reviewed.
Despite the concerns, the judge ruled there was not enough evidence to pause the case at this stage. Proceedings are expected to continue while the issue remains under consideration.
The hearing reportedly grew heated at times. Prosecutors acknowledged the unusual nature of the exchange. One said, “I’ve never seen anything like what happened.”
Ortiz has previously shown signs of instability in court. She has argued with her attorney and attempted to have him removed from the case, according to reports.
Details of the Shooting
Authorities say Ortiz drove to the property and fired at least 20 rounds from a rifle. The gunfire struck walls, gates, and a trailer where Rihanna and Rocky were located.
Inside the home were multiple family members, including children and staff. A bullet was also found near a nursery, though it did not penetrate fully.
Ortiz was arrested hours later with the weapon, ammunition, and a disguise, according to prosecutors.
Following her arrest, Ortiz made a brief statement to investigators. “I would like to say that I wasn’t attempting murder. But that’s all I wanted to say,” she said.
She has pleaded not guilty to all charges. If convicted, she could face life in prison.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials have not identified a clear motive or confirmed any personal connection between Ortiz and the singer. Investigators are reviewing social media activity and other evidence.
Legal experts say questions about competency could significantly affect the timeline of the case. A defendant deemed unfit for trial may be ordered into treatment before proceedings resume.
For now, the case continues to move forward in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
