Sleep can wait; Jay-Z cannot. That seemed to be Gayle King’s exact philosophy when she was caught staying up all night to witness the hip-hop icon’s massive hometown show. Leaving her CBS Mornings bedtime rules at the door, King leaned fully into the New York energy. She proved that some concert experiences are well worth a sleepless night and an extra shot of espresso the next morning.
During Monday’s CBS Mornings, King said the fans at Yankee Stadium were still excited despite being delayed for hours, PEOPLE reported.
“People are dragging me or ragging on me, saying, ‘Gayle, no, not everybody had a good time. Some people left early,’ ” King said. “Very few people left early. Most people stayed because you’re thinking, ‘You’ve invested all this time,’ and you kept hearing, ‘He’s coming, he’s coming, he’s coming.’ ”
King then shared footage of DJ Khaled, who was adamant about staying positive.
“I’ve been saying, this is history. Gayle, you’ve got to look at the positive in everything,” King recalled. “This is history, and this is so legendary.”
After midnight, JAY-Z apologized to the crowd for the long delay.
“There was like 10,000 people outside,” he said from the stage, according to Variety. “But your guys’ safety and everybody’s safety outside… I don’t want to start the music, and people get trampled. So I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody was OK.”
“I appreciate your patience. We’re going to have a good time tonight,” he added. “I got some s— for you, I promise you.”
KING RECALLED HER FIRST TIME LISTENING TO JAY-Z
King also shared that when she was first introduced to Jay-Z’s music.
“I got hooked,” she said after n listening to the rapper’s 2000 hit “I Just Want Love U (Give It to Me).” “He was listening to it at 9. And I said, ‘What are you listening to, you can’t listen to that!’ Fast forward to me and Will… singing… side by side…”
