Superstar singer Akon was arrested in DeKalb County last week, per WSBTV.
Akon, formerly Aliaune Thiam, was arrested by the Chamblee Police Department on November 7 for a suspended license. He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail just after 12:30 p.m., jail records show, and released about six hours later.
According to an incident report, Chamblee police responded around 11 a.m. to a Flock camera alert for a white 2024 Tesla Cybertruck wanted by the Roswell Police Department. Officers found the vehicle parked at Tint World on Chamblee Dunwoody Road and saw a man standing nearby who matched the registered owner’s description.
An officer informed Thiam of active warrant for his arrest. Police said Akon remained calm and told officers he was aware of the warrant.
He was placed in handcuffs, patted down for weapons, and detained while officers confirmed the warrant with Roswell police. Once confirmed, Thiam was officially placed under arrest.
The 52-year-old’s arrest stemmed from an out-of-county warrant from Roswell. On Sept. 10 a police officer noticed Thiam’s Tesla Cybertruck “stranded” with a dead battery, per Page Six.
While waiting for a tow truck to arrive, the officer realized Thiam had a suspended license for failure to appear for a January 2023 court date — so the songwriter was issued a citation and release. Before the Cybertruck could be impounded, police seized an illegal vape found in the center console.
His prior run-ins with the law stem from over 20 years ago. In 1998, Thiam was jailed for several months on car theft charges that were later dropped. Nearly a decade later, in 2008, he pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment after tossing a teenager off a stage during a concert in New York. He received community service and a fine.
The five-time Grammy nominee, is best known for “Lonely,” “Smack That” and his early 2000s hit song, “Locked Up.
His personal life recently made headlines when his wife, Tomeka Thiam, filed for divorce after 28 years of marriage.
In September, Thiam sought joint legal custody and sole physical custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
