Akon is once again drawing attention for his outspoken views on relationships and marriage, discussing the ins and outs of his life at home.

During a recent appearance on the “We Need To Talk” podcast, the 53-year-old artist discussed the rules that guide his polygamous lifestyle. Akon confirmed he has multiple wives, though he declined to reveal an exact number.

“I’ll just leave that to your imagination,” Akon said when asked how many wives he currently has.

The Grammy-nominated singer said his relationships are built on structure, communication and clearly defined boundaries. He also made clear that the arrangement only applies one way.

“Only me,” Akon said when asked whether his wives are allowed to have other partners.

The comments quickly fueled debate online. Some listeners defended his traditional views. Others criticized the rules as unequal.

A Structured Household

Akon described his first wife as the central figure in the family dynamic. He referred to her as “the queen” and said respect for her is non-negotiable.

According to Akon, every partner entering the relationship understands the expectations from the beginning. He said honesty is the foundation of the arrangement.

The singer explained that communication prevents jealousy and confusion within the household. He also claimed the lifestyle creates more support for the women involved.

“When the family is united in that way, the benefit is more for the woman than for the man,” Akon said. “Cos the man actually has to take care of them all. He has to treat them all equally.”

Akon has defended polygamy for years. In earlier interviews, he connected the practice to African culture and personal belief systems.

He has also spoken openly about the challenges of monogamy.

“My life was a lot easier when I had multiple women surrounding me,” Akon said during a separate interview earlier this year. “It is a lot harder with just one woman.”

Public Reaction Grows

The singer’s latest remarks sparked strong reactions across social media platforms. Critics accused him of promoting double standards in modern relationships. Supporters argued that consensual polygamy should not be judged differently than other relationship structures.

Some online users pointed to Akon’s recent personal struggles. His longtime wife, Tomeka Thiam, filed for divorce in 2025 after nearly three decades of marriage.

Despite the criticism, Akon appeared unfazed during the interview. He maintained that his relationships function because everyone involved understands the rules from the start.

Akon rose to fame in the early 2000s with hits including “Locked Up,” “Lonely” and “Smack That.” Beyond music, he has remained in headlines for his business ventures, philanthropy and controversial public statements.
