Anna Faris said she was caught off guard when the Wayans brothers reached out to invite her back to the Scary Movie franchise, marking a reunion decades in the making.
Faris, who rose to prominence as Cindy Campbell in the original 2000 parody film, had not worked with the creators since the early years of the series. The siblings — Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans — wrote and produced the first two installments before departing the franchise after creative disputes.
“I was shocked,” Faris said in a recent interview. “I hadn’t seen them since 2002.”
The actress is set to reprise her role in Scary Movie 6, scheduled for release in June 2026. The new film reunites much of the original creative team and cast, including Regina Hall, who plays Brenda Meeks.
A Reunion Years in the Making
The return represents more than a sequel. It signals a full-circle moment for Faris, who credits the franchise with launching her career.
“I never really got to thank them,” Faris said. “They gave me my first big break.”
The Scary Movie series became a cultural force in the early 2000s, blending slapstick humor with sharp satire of horror films. The first movie opened to record-breaking numbers for an R-rated horror comedy at the time.
After the Wayans family exited, the franchise continued with several sequels. However, critics and fans often noted a shift in tone without the original creators’ influence.
Now, the reunion aims to restore that original voice. The upcoming installment will parody modern horror hits, including recent entries in the genre, while maintaining the irreverent style that defined the series.
‘Healing’ Return to Comedy Roots
Faris described the experience of returning as deeply meaningful. She called the reunion “healing” and emphasized how different it feels this time around.
“We got to be back together again,” she said.
The actress also noted that she now has greater confidence on set, reflecting on her growth since the early films.
Production on the film began in late 2025, with much of the original cast reprising their roles. The project has been described by its creators as a “rebooquel,” combining elements of a reboot and a sequel.
For the Wayans brothers, the return marks their first collaboration on the franchise in nearly two decades. For Faris, it is a chance to reconnect with the people who helped define her career.
“It feels like coming home,” she said.
With its blend of nostalgia and updated satire, Scary Movie 6 is expected to reintroduce audiences to a franchise that once dominated the comedy landscape — and to the creative team that made it a hit.
