NBA legend and broadcaster Charles Barkley remains defiant following a wave of social media criticism regarding a suggestive joke he made about rapper Cardi B during Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

Speaking on Wednesday during an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Barkley brushed off calls for an apology and suggested he would welcome a termination from his broadcasting duties if it meant a guaranteed payout. The controversy stems from Monday night’s halftime show at Madison Square Garden, where Cardi B performed alongside the Knicks City Dancers.

Following the set, Barkley made a quip regarding the artist’s wardrobe and physique, telling his fellow “Inside the NBA” analysts, “I don’t know if those B’s. Those might be Cardi D’s. I’m pretty sure those aren’t B’s. She’s got the wrong initials.” The pun, which played on the rapper’s stage name and bra sizes, immediately caused a stir on the broadcast. Longtime host Ernie Johnson quickly distanced himself from the remark, while the clip went viral on social media platforms like X and YouTube, garnering millions of views within 24 hours.

Barkley, known for his unfiltered and often polarizing commentary, told Dan Patrick that he has no intention of walking back his words. “I’m hoping they fire me,” Barkley said during the interview. “I got six or seven years left on my contract that they know I’ve got no chance of doing. I would love for them to fire me and have to pay me for the next six or seven years.” The Hall of Famer explained that his current contract would potentially require a massive payout if he were terminated without cause.

He noted that he has already been discussing the logistics with his legal representation, jokingly asking his agent what he could do to get fired while still securing his full salary for the duration of the deal. Responding to the backlash from viewers who found the comments insensitive or inappropriate, Barkley took a characteristically blunt stance. “People can’t take a joke,” Barkley said. “If people don’t like me or don’t have a sense of humor, they can kiss my ass. My whole ass, not just one cheek, the whole ass.”

Barkley, 63, has hinted at retirement several times in recent years, despite “Inside the NBA” remaining one of the most popular sports programs on television. The show, which features Barkley alongside Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Johnson, is currently navigating a period of transition as the NBA’s media rights landscape shifts toward new partners like ESPN and Amazon.

While Cardi B acknowledged the viral moment on social media, ESPN and TNT Sports have not issued formal statements regarding any potential disciplinary action.
