Debbie Allen believes that the timing is perfect for a sequel to “A Different World.

During Netflix’s American Black Film Festival panel, Allen shared her thoughts on why the show is still relevant.

“We passed the torch rather easily,” Allen said. “The time right now, it couldn’t be better than right now to hear and see where young Black America is. What do we think about? What are our dreams? What are our hopes? What are our brick walls, our glass ceilings?”

“We’re still out there on the ground fighting,” Allen said.

“We got a Supreme Court turning laws around. We have a president that is starting wars, fighting at the gas pump, we’re fighting [for] education, what books our kids can read,” Allen continued. “We’re still in battle, and we were in battle then. We thought we kind of moved the needle, and now it’s kind of trying to roll back, but in the middle of all of that is a different world.”

Allen spoke about tapping into what made “A Different World” so special and expanding it to a new audience.

“What was important to us was maintaining what made the original so special, and that feeling that the original gave me,” said Allen.

“One of the things that I think about a lot is wanting the sequel to feel like a warm hug,” she continued. “And to be full of heart and love and community and friendship, but also to have the political consciousness that the original series had.”

THE ORIGINAL CAST ARE RETURNING TO THE SERIES

A Different World sequel will premiere on September 24, 2026—exactly 39 years to the day after the iconic original sitcom first debuted on NBC. The 10-episode revival follows Deborah Wayne (played by Tony Award-winner Maleah Joi Moon), the free-spirited youngest daughter of legendary sweethearts Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne.

Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are reprising their roles as Whitley and Dwayne. Also, Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), Charnele Brown (Kimberly Reese), Dawnn Lewis (Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor), and Jenifer Lewis (Dean Davenport) are returning.
