Donatella Versace, the iconic force behind the luxury fashion house Versace, has announced her decision to step down as Creative Director after nearly three decades at the helm. This significant transition marks the end of an era for the brand synonymous with glamour and bold designs.
A Legacy of Leadership
Donatella took over the creative reins of Versace in 1997, following the tragic murder of her brother, Gianni Versace, the brand’s founder. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”
Under her leadership, Versace maintained its distinctive aesthetic, blending opulence with daring designs. Her tenure solidified the brand’s position in pop culture, dressing countless celebrities and influencing fashion trends globally.
Transition and Future Vision
Effective April 1, 2025, Donatella will transition to the role of Chief Brand Ambassador for Versace. In this capacity, she aims to support philanthropic efforts and continue advocating for the brand worldwide.
“I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes,” she expressed.
Dario Vitale, formerly the Design and Image Director at Miu Miu, has been appointed as the new Chief Creative Officer. Vitale expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am truly honored to join Versace as the Chief Creative Officer and to be a part of this special and powerful fashion luxury House created by Gianni and Donatella.”
Industry Speculations
This leadership change comes amid speculations about Versace’s future ownership. Reports suggest that Prada Group is nearing a deal to acquire Versace from Capri Holdings for approximately €1.5 billion. Analysts believe that Vitale’s appointment could be strategically aligned with this potential acquisition. David Swartz, an analyst with Morningstar, commented, “I don’t know if bringing in Dario Vitale is directly related to the potential sale to Prada, but it seems like it makes it even more likely.”
Despite these developments, Donatella remains committed to the brand’s legacy. She affirmed, “In my new role as chief brand ambassador, I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.”
