The The New York Times has released a new list recognizing the 30 greatest living American songwriters. The unranked collection highlights influential figures across generations and genres.
Among those named are JAY-Z, Mariah Carey and Taylor Swift. The list also includes legends such as Bob Dylan and Carole King.
The publication described the featured artists as individuals whose music has shaped American culture. It added that their work has influenced global audiences for decades.
A Cross-Genre Celebration
The list spans multiple eras and styles, including hip-hop, pop, country and R&B. Artists such as Missy Elliott, Stevie Wonder and Dolly Parton were also recognized.
According to reporting tied to the project, contributors and industry insiders helped shape the selections. More than 250 experts participated in the process.
In an accompanying essay, artist FKA twigs praised Elliott’s lyricism. She described it as “chic vulgarity” and “so tender and so sensual.”
The list does not rank the songwriters. Instead, it aims to reflect influence and lasting impact.
Spotlight on Iconic Voices
Several honorees have achieved historic milestones in songwriting. Carey, for example, has sold more than 220 million records worldwide. She has also written numerous chart-topping hits.
JAY-Z’s lyrical influence has been widely documented. Rapper Pusha T reflected on his impact in a tribute essay. He said he felt “scared” after hearing one of JAY-Z’s performances.
Swift, one of the youngest artists included, discussed her songwriting process in a related feature. She said fan interpretations can feel like “detective work,” adding it is “a little bit weird.”
The list also features artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bad Bunny and Lana Del Rey.
Editors said the goal was to capture a wide view of American songwriting. They emphasized both cultural reach and artistic innovation.
The recognition arrives as conversations continue about songwriting’s evolving role in music. Streaming and global audiences have expanded how songs are created and shared.
