J.R. Smith has added a new milestone to his decorated career. The two-time NBA champion officially graduated from North Carolina A&T State University this week, earning a bachelor’s degree after returning to school later in life.

Smith walked across the stage during the university’s spring commencement ceremonies. He received a degree in liberal studies with a focus on applied cultural thought.

The moment marked a full-circle achievement for the former professional athlete. Smith entered the NBA directly from high school in 2004 and never attended college during his playing career.

A Second Act in Higher Education

After retiring from basketball, Smith enrolled at North Carolina A&T in 2021. He joined the school’s golf program as a walk-on while pursuing his degree.

His return to campus drew national attention. It also reshaped how many viewed his post-NBA journey.

Smith quickly found success in the classroom. He earned academic honors early in his studies and embraced life as a student-athlete.

The experience extended beyond academics. Smith often spoke about the importance of community at the historically Black university.

“Walking through the airports… when I speak the name of A&T, it comes with such pride and joy,” Smith said.

Finding Purpose Beyond Basketball

Smith’s journey to graduation carried personal significance. He described his time at the university as transformative.

“I don’t want to sound cliche, but it saved me from a point to where I was going to destruct from the inside-out,” Smith said.

He added that the experience came at the right moment in his life. Smith said he intends to give back to the institution that supported him.

“It’s just so much that they’ve given me that I have to give back,” he said. “I don’t know how I’m going to repay it, but it will be tenfold over.”

Smith’s story resonated with many students and fans. His return to school was documented in a Prime Video series that followed his transition from professional athlete to college student.

Now, with diploma in hand, Smith joins a growing list of athletes who pursued education after professional success. His achievement underscores a broader message about lifelong learning.
