La Toya Jackson says her sister Janet Jackson made a personal decision to stay out of the upcoming Michael biopic, despite being invited to participate.
Speaking at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, La Toya Jackson addressed questions about Janet’s absence. She said the choice was entirely Janet’s and was respected by both the family and filmmakers.
“She was asked, and she kindly declined,” La Toya Jackson said. “That was her decision, and we honor that.”
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, chronicles the life of Michael Jackson from his early years through his rise to global fame. It stars Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, in the lead role.
Family Decisions and Creative Focus
Janet Jackson’s absence has drawn attention, given her own major role in the Jackson family legacy. However, La Toya Jackson emphasized that there was no conflict surrounding the decision.
“It’s all love,” she said, noting that Janet continues to support the family and the project in her own way.
Director Antoine Fuqua echoed that sentiment, expressing respect for Janet’s wishes. He has described the film as a focused portrayal of Michael Jackson’s journey rather than a comprehensive look at every family member.
The biopic includes several key figures in Jackson’s life, including his parents, portrayed by Nia Long and Colman Domingo.
Industry observers note that biographical films often narrow their scope to maintain narrative clarity. In this case, the filmmakers chose to center the story tightly on Michael Jackson’s career and personal experiences.
A Highly Anticipated Release
“Michael” is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on April 24. The film has generated strong interest ahead of its debut, with early reactions praising Jaafar Jackson’s performance.
The project has also faced scrutiny over what it includes and omits. Reports indicate that certain controversial aspects of Michael Jackson’s later life were removed during production changes.
Still, anticipation remains high for the film, which traces Jackson’s path from his days with the Jackson 5 to his emergence as a solo icon.
As for Janet Jackson, her absence appears to reflect a personal boundary rather than a creative oversight. La Toya Jackson made clear that the decision was understood by all involved.
“She supports us,” La Toya said. “But this was her choice.”
