LeBron James has made one thing clear as free agency speculation continues. Basketball is only part of the equation.
The NBA’s all-time leading scorer said his family’s happiness will heavily influence where he finishes his legendary career. That includes the opinion of his youngest child, daughter Zhuri James.
Speaking during appearances at Fanatics Fest in New York, James explained that choosing his next team extends beyond championship aspirations. The four-time NBA champion said he is weighing personal, family and lifestyle considerations before making his decision.
James has remained quiet about his preferred destination. However, he acknowledged the process has become increasingly emotional as he approaches the closing chapters of his career.
“It’s not just about the team,” James said. “There’s so many other factors that I’m factoring in right now on what best fits me as a player, what best fits me as a person and what best fits my happiness, and also my family as well.”
Family Comes Before Basketball
Among those factors is 11-year-old Zhuri, whose feelings carry significant weight in the family’s discussions.
James shared that he recently spoke with his daughter about the possibility of leaving Los Angeles. Her response reminded him that every basketball decision also affects the people closest to him.
“I actually told Zhuri the other day that Daddy won’t be a Laker next year,” James said. “She started crying. I said, ‘Why are you crying?’ She said, ‘Because I’m going to miss my friends.’ So, those things matter.”
The moment highlighted a reality many professional athletes face. Major career decisions often require balancing competitive goals with family stability.
James has frequently spoken about the importance of being present for his children. Throughout his career, he has attended their games and celebrated their accomplishments publicly.
Zhuri has carved out her own athletic path. Rather than following her father and brothers into basketball, she has embraced volleyball. James has repeatedly expressed support for that decision and regularly attends her matches.
Decision Expected Soon
James did not reveal which franchise is leading the race for his services. Rumors have linked him to several contenders after his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers became official earlier this month. Potential destinations have included Cleveland, Golden State, Miami and Philadelphia, though James has declined to discuss specific teams publicly.
During a live recording of his “Mind the Game” podcast, fans repeatedly tried to persuade James to announce his plans. He politely declined.
“It’s a big decision for not only myself, but for my family as well,” James said. “Just for the last part of my career and where I want to spend the last few years or the last year or the last two years of my NBA career.”
He added, “It’s going to be fun wherever I land.”
James also reassured fans that they will not have to wait much longer.
“I won’t hold you guys up too much longer,” he said.
At 41, James continues to rewrite expectations for longevity in professional basketball. Yet his latest comments suggest that legacy is no longer measured only by championships or statistics.
Instead, the next chapter of his career may be determined just as much by family conversations as front-office negotiations.
