Mariah Carey, the iconic pop and R&B artist, is preparing to unveil a long-shelved alternative rock album she recorded in 1995. The project, titled Someone’s Ugly Daughter, was initially released under the band name “Chick” with lead vocals by her friend Clarissa Dane. Carey, however, had recorded her own lead vocals for the album, which were replaced before its original release due to concerns from her record label.

A Hidden Chapter in the Career of Mariah Carey

During the recording sessions for her 1995 album Daydream, Carey found solace in creating music that diverged from her established sound. “I would just write these things,” she recalled, “say, ‘Can you play [vocalizing]?’ to the guitar player, who would happen to be there, while we’re working on records like ‘Always Be My Baby’ and ‘One Sweet Day,’ eventually ‘Fantasy,’ and whatever from that era.”

Carey described the alternative project as an outlet during a time when she felt creatively constrained. “It was my release, and it was just fun. Literally, I started out, ‘Oh, this is just for laughs. We’re having fun,’ but then I was like, ‘No, this is me screaming. This is literally what I’m going through.’”

Rediscovering the Original Recordings

In recent years, Carey has located the original recordings featuring her lead vocals. “The quest for that version is going great. We actually have it,” she confirmed. She expressed a strong desire to share this version with the public, stating, “I think this unearthed version will become something that, yes, we should hear.”

Carey also hinted at the possibility of collaborating with other artists on the project. “I’m working on a version of something where there’ll be another artist working on this with me as well,” she teased.

A New Direction

The forthcoming release of Someone’s Ugly Daughter marks a significant departure from Carey’s traditional musical style. The album’s raw, grunge-inspired sound offers fans a glimpse into a different facet of her artistry. As Carey prepares to share this hidden chapter of her career, anticipation builds among listeners eager to experience this unique project.

While no official release date has been announced, Carey remains committed to bringing this long-awaited album to light. “I’m so mad I haven’t done that yet,” she admitted, emphasizing her determination to finally share this work with the world.
