Rapper Meek Mill is publicly criticizing Nike over a new sneaker collaboration tied to LeBron James, claiming the company borrowed heavily from his signature brand without contacting him first.

The dispute erupted after Nike unveiled the “Dreams & Nightmares” version of the LeBron 23 sneaker. The shoe references James’ first NBA championship with the Miami Heat in 2012. That title also mirrors the name of Meek Mill’s breakthrough debut album, “Dreams and Nightmares,” released the same year.

Meek Mill voiced his frustration on social media Monday. The rapper suggested the athletic giant used imagery and branding strongly associated with his music career.

“So @nike just gone take my whole brand and mash it up with LeBron … what is this … why wouldn’t anybody holler at me about this?” Meek wrote online. “I thought the sneaks was fake? Wassup with this?”

Nike has not publicly responded to the criticism. James also has not commented on the controversy.

A Title Closely Linked to Meek Mill’s Career

Released in 2012, “Dreams and Nightmares” became one of Meek Mill’s defining projects. The album’s title track developed into a cultural anthem, especially in Philadelphia sports culture. The song has been played during playoff runs, locker room celebrations and major sporting events for years.

The connection between the album and Philadelphia identity made the sneaker’s branding immediately recognizable to many fans online. Several social media users questioned whether Nike should have collaborated directly with Meek Mill before releasing the shoe.

Nike described the sneaker as a tribute to James’ early struggles and eventual championship success in Miami. Promotional material highlighted the “dreams and nightmares” theme as part of James’ personal basketball journey.

The sneaker released Tuesday through Nike and select retailers. The launch generated attention before Meek Mill’s criticism surfaced online.

Fans Debate Ownership of the Phrase

The disagreement has sparked debate across music and sneaker communities. Some fans argued the phrase “dreams and nightmares” is common language that cannot belong to one artist. Others pointed to the strong cultural association between the title and Meek Mill’s career.

The rapper has long blended music, sports and fashion partnerships throughout his career. His connection to Philadelphia sports culture remains especially strong. Athletes frequently use his music during introductions and championship celebrations.

James and Meek Mill also have overlapping fan bases and public ties within entertainment circles. That overlap fueled speculation that a collaboration involving all parties could have generated significant excitement.
