After years of tension and a highly publicized feud, Mo’Nique and Lee Daniels have rekindled their friendship, proving that some bonds are worth fighting for. The two have reunited on the set of their latest project, “The Deliverance,” marking the first time they’ve worked together since the fallout that occurred during the promotion of the critically acclaimed film “Precious.”
Reconciliation Between Mo’Nique and Daniels
The rift between Mo’Nique and Daniels began after the 2009 release of “Precious,” which earned Mo’Nique an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Despite her success, the relationship between the actress and the film’s producers, including Daniels, Tyler Perry, and Oprah Winfrey, soured. The conflict arose when Mo’Nique declined to participate in international promotion for the film, which was not in her contract. This decision led to a prolonged and public dispute that lasted for years.
The tension between Mo’Nique and Daniels came to a head when Daniels issued a heartfelt apology, acknowledging the pain that had been caused. “That meant forgiveness, that meant apologizing, even if I didn’t understand what I was apologizing for. I had to understand that she was hurt, and that is my sister, and that I love her,” Daniels shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Reunited for “The Deliverance”
Their renewed friendship has now translated into a professional reunion. Mo’Nique and Daniels have come together for “The Deliverance,” a horror film inspired by true events. The movie follows Ebony (played by Andra Day), a single mother who, alongside her family, must battle a demon that possesses her children. Mo’Nique plays a social worker who becomes entangled in the family’s struggle.
Reflecting on their rekindled bond with Variety, Mo’Nique emphasized the importance of their connection. “You ever have somebody in your life where your chemistry is right there, but something happened and it pulls you apart, but you don’t forget the heart of the person?” she said, expressing her gratitude for the renewed relationship.
“The Deliverance” is now available in theaters and will be streaming on Netflix starting August 30.
