Fans of the cult horror hit Ma are one step closer to seeing Sue Ann return to the big screen. Actress Octavia Spencer recently shared a fresh update on the long-awaited sequel, confirming that the project continues to move forward as development gains momentum. The latest comments come more than a year after Blumhouse officially announced Ma 2.
The original 2019 thriller surprised Hollywood with its box office success. Produced on a modest budget, the film earned more than $61 million worldwide. It also developed an enthusiastic online following through memes and repeat viewings. That popularity helped transform the psychological horror film into a modern cult favorite.
Spencer Says Fans Will Be Happy
While promoting her latest project, Spencer addressed the status of Ma 2. She suggested the sequel remains very much alive and indicated that fans should remain patient as work continues behind the scenes.
Her comments follow Blumhouse’s official announcement in 2025 that Spencer would reprise her role as Sue Ann Ellington, the lonely woman whose hospitality toward local teenagers evolved into terrifying revenge. At the time, the studio celebrated the announcement by leaning into one of the film’s most recognizable catchphrases.
Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, said, “Ma likes to say, ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”
Spencer also embraced the announcement with her trademark humor. Responding to the news on social media, she wrote, “It’s going to be aMAzing.”
Although production details remain limited, Spencer’s latest remarks suggest development continues steadily. Neither Blumhouse nor Universal Pictures has announced a release date.
A Cult Favorite Earns Another Chance
Few expected Ma to enjoy the lasting cultural impact it achieved after its theatrical release. Critics delivered mixed reviews, yet audiences continued embracing the movie long after it left theaters. Internet users turned Spencer’s unsettling performance into countless reaction images, GIFs and memes that spread across social media.
Director Tate Taylor previously acknowledged the unexpected popularity while discussing ideas for a sequel.
“My idea is that she’s moved to another town, and she has open houses in another city and kills people in the open house,” Taylor said during an earlier interview.
He added, “I think she’d be a real estate agent in the Pacific Northwest, and just murder White people looking at McMansions. That’s as far as I’ve gotten!”
Whether that concept survives into the finished screenplay remains unknown. Since the sequel’s announcement, screenwriter Ashley Nicole Black has joined the project, signaling that development has continued beyond the initial announcement.
The original film starred Spencer alongside Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, Luke Evans and McKaley Miller. It followed a group of teenagers who accept an invitation to party in Sue Ann’s basement. What begins as an unusual friendship gradually descends into psychological manipulation and violence.
Spencer’s performance earned praise even from critics who found fault with the film itself. Over time, audiences embraced the movie’s campy tone and memorable dialogue, giving Ma a second life through streaming platforms and online fandom.
