Multi-Grammy winning singer, songwriter, producer and instrumentalist, Raphael Saadiq is having an exciting year. After working on Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed, RENAISSANCE, and Daniel Caesar’s forthcoming Never Enough, Saadiq is taking a backseat from production to be center stage. On Thursday (March 23), Saadiq announced the “Just Me and You” Tour with band Tony! Toni! Toné!.
After Saadiq’s Instagram post announcement, the comments were instantly flooded. John Legend commented, “Ok I’m there!”. Common added, “Best news of the day!”. Questlove chimed in with, “Man y’all Better Stop Playin Wit My Emotions—this better be REAL.”
Tony! Toni! Toné! was a R&B/soul band comprised of Raphael Saadiq, his brother, D’wayne Wiggins and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley. The group peaked in the 90s, known for popular hits like, “Whatever You Want”, “Feels Good”, and “It Never Rains (in Southern California).” With four studio albums from 1988 to 1996, Tony! Toni! Toné!’s music became the score for 90s film classics such as Boyz n the Hood, House Party, and Poetic Justice.
The group’s last album was in 1996 with House Of Music before their 1998 split.
After the split, Saadiq went on to become a much-sought-after producer, scoring hits for Total, D’Angelo, The Roots and Alicia Keys. He formed his own group Lucy Pearl in 1999 which yielded two popular singles, “Dance Tonight” and “Don’t Mess with My Man”. This year, Saadiq won his second Grammy award for ‘Best R&B Song’ with Beyonce’s “Cuff It” – his first was for Erykah Badu‘s “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop)” within the same category.
