Actress Sally Field is opening up about what happened behind the scenes while on the set of the 1989 classic film Steel Magnolias.
According to reports, Field revealed that her co-star and on-screen daughter, Julia Roberts was mistreated by the movie’s director, Herbert Ross. Field described the treatment that Roberts received from Ross as “very, very, very hard.”
“If you ever talk to Julia, she’ll tell you,” Field said. “We would all rally around Julia because she was the baby. She was sort of the newcomer. And she was wonderful, and he just picked on her. It was awful.”
She continued to speak on how he singled Roberts out, “Because he could be a real son of a bitch, that’s why. Some people just need to have somebody they pick on. But we all came to her aid.”
However, the two-time Oscar winner said she wasn’t subjected to that kind of treatment. “I mean, I don’t mind notes, but I will argue if it doesn’t make sense to me,” she explained. “But if you’re gonna be mean to me, then you’re going to find a warrior. I may be small, but you don’t want to do that.”
The film was based on Robert Harling’s 1987 stage play of the same name. The movie follows a close-knit group of women who are hit with tragedy once one of their own passes away. The play was inspired by the Harling’s sister who passed away in 1985 due to complications related to Type 1 Diabetes.
The movie also starred Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Dolly Parton, and Olympia Dukakis. Did y’all know this about Julia Roberts?
