Shaquille O’Neal is covering funeral expenses for a 12-year-old girl who died after a fight with classmates, authorities said.

The girl, identified as Jada West, collapsed after a fight near a school bus stop on March 5. She died three days later at a hospital.

O’Neal said he stepped in to support the grieving family during an overwhelming time.

“No parent should ever have to bury their child,” O’Neal said in a statement. “And if there is anything I can do to ease even a small part of that burden, then it is the right thing to do.”

The offer was coordinated with law enforcement agencies in the Atlanta suburbs, where O’Neal serves in a community relations role.

A Sudden Tragedy Under Investigation

Police said the fight occurred shortly after students were dropped off by a school bus in a residential neighborhood.

Video reviewed by investigators shows two girls exchanging punches before an adult intervened.

Jada appeared to walk away after the altercation. Moments later, she collapsed in the street.

Emergency responders were called to the scene after reports of a child in cardiac arrest.

She was transported to a hospital, where she died on March 8.

Authorities have not yet released a final cause of death. An autopsy is pending as part of the investigation.

Family members said the sixth grader suffered a serious brain injury, which may have contributed to her death.

Relatives have also raised concerns about possible bullying leading up to the incident.

The school district said the fight did not occur on school grounds or during school hours.

Community Response and Support

O’Neal, a Hall of Fame basketball player and longtime public figure, has a history of assisting families after tragedies.

In this case, he said the story deeply affected him.

“This story touched my heart the moment I saw it in the media,” he said.

Local officials echoed his sentiments and emphasized community support for the family.

“When a child’s life is taken so tragically, it affects all of us,” a sheriff’s official said.

Jada’s funeral is scheduled for later this week, according to a family member.

The case has sparked broader conversations about youth violence and school safety in the area.

Investigators continue to review video evidence and await medical findings.

Meanwhile, community members have left memorials and messages of support near the site of the incident.

O’Neal said his goal is simple: to help the family focus on grieving, not financial stress.

“Our community must surround this family with love, support, and compassion,” he said.
