Grammy-winning singer-songwriter SZA is opening up about a deeply personal part of her life. The artist revealed she has been formally diagnosed with high-functioning autism after undergoing a professional evaluation.

The announcement came through a post shared on one of her Instagram accounts. SZA, born Solána Imani Rowe, posted what appeared to be portions of her psychological assessment alongside a candid caption explaining her decision to seek answers.

“Finally took the time n got formally diagnosed,” she wrote. “High functioning autism/Asperger’s.” She continued, “Pattern recognition told me and I WILL get to the bottom of it. Stop playing in my face.”

The singer also suggested her diagnosis helps explain some of her long-held perspectives. She linked it to her strong skepticism about artificial intelligence, writing that recognizing patterns has always been one of her strengths.

The documents she shared reportedly described characteristics consistent with autism spectrum disorder. They referenced differences in reciprocal social interaction and noted sensory sensitivities. The evaluation also stated that many of her behaviors were both self-reported and observed during the assessment.

SZA has previously spoken publicly about anxiety, self-doubt and feeling misunderstood. Her latest revelation adds new context to experiences she has discussed throughout her career. Fans have often connected with her willingness to speak honestly about mental health, vulnerability and personal growth.

Fans Praise Her Transparency

The singer’s announcement quickly spread across social media. Many supporters thanked her for discussing a diagnosis that still carries misconceptions.

Others noted that adults, especially women, are frequently diagnosed later in life. Experts say autism can present differently across individuals. Some people develop coping strategies that make characteristics less noticeable for years.

Although SZA referenced “high-functioning autism” and “Asperger’s” in her post, clinicians today generally use the broader diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Asperger’s syndrome is no longer listed as a separate diagnosis in current diagnostic guidelines.

The singer has built a reputation for sharing personal moments without heavily filtering them. Whether discussing relationships, confidence or health, she often speaks directly to fans through social media.

That openness has helped strengthen her connection with audiences throughout her career. It has also made her one of the music industry’s most relatable voices.

SZA remains one of contemporary R&B’s biggest stars. Her critically acclaimed albums, sold-out tours and collaborations have earned her widespread acclaim and multiple Grammy Awards.

Her latest disclosure shifts attention away from music and toward neurodiversity. Many fans said they hope her comments encourage others to seek evaluations if they have long suspected they may be on the autism spectrum.

By speaking publicly about her diagnosis, SZA joins a growing number of entertainers who have shared their neurodivergent experiences. Advocates say those conversations can reduce stigma and encourage greater understanding of autism in adults.
