The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a statement Monday after a tense moment involving actress and singer Teyana Taylor at the 2026 Oscars drew widespread attention online.
Video circulating on social media showed Taylor confronting a man she identified as a security guard. The exchange reportedly occurred shortly after the ceremony ended at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
In the clip, Taylor appeared visibly upset as she accused the man of pushing her during a crowded moment backstage.
“Do not shove me. Do not touch me. Do not push me,” Taylor said in the footage. “You’re very rude.”
The confrontation quickly spread across social media, becoming one of the most talked-about moments following the awards ceremony.
Academy Responds to Incident
In a statement issued after the video went viral, the Academy said it was concerned by Taylor’s experience and emphasized its commitment to guest safety.
“We were extremely upset to learn about the experience endured by Teyana Taylor at the end of the Oscars ceremony last night,” the organization said. “We have worked with Teyana over the last several months during awards season, and she has been nothing short of remarkable, supportive, kind, and all about community.”
The Academy also noted that the altercation involved a member of an outside security company contracted for the event. Despite that, the organization said the responsibility for guests ultimately remains with the awards show itself.
“Though the incident was with our outside security firm SIS, the experience of every single guest is our responsibility,” the statement continued.
Security Industry Specialists, the firm hired to manage security during the ceremony, later acknowledged the interaction. The company described the situation as a brief exchange during crowd control in a busy area.
“There was a brief interaction involving Ms. Taylor and a member of our security team during the show last evening,” the company said. “During that interaction, there was incidental contact and we regret that the situation escalated.”
A Celebratory Night Overshadowed
Taylor attended the 2026 Academy Awards as a nominee for best supporting actress for her role in One Battle After Another. Although she ultimately lost the category to Amy Madigan, the film had a major night overall.
The project won six Oscars, including best picture and best director for Paul Thomas Anderson.
The altercation reportedly occurred as Taylor attempted to return to the stage for a group photo after the film’s win. In the crowded backstage environment, a security guard allegedly blocked her path and physical contact followed.
Despite the heated moment, Taylor later downplayed the incident in comments to reporters.
“Everybody’s having a good time and you know, security was just doing a lot,” she said. “I’m proud, I’m happy.”
She also reiterated her stance on the situation.
“I just don’t tolerate disrespect — especially when it’s unwarranted and unprovoked,” Taylor said.
The Academy said it is reviewing the incident and working with the security firm to prevent similar issues in the future.
