Tyrese Gibson recently found himself at the center of online debate following his rendition of the National Anthem at a preseason NFL game between the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys. The performance, inspired by Marvin Gaye’s iconic 1974 version, sparked mixed reactions from fans and critics alike.

Tyrese’s Response to Critics

Despite the backlash, Tyrese took to social media to address the criticism with a positive attitude. Responding to comments that he “failed miserably” at emulating Gaye, Tyrese respectfully disagreed. “Thank you… You’re always welcome here… respectfully I don’t really know if I agree,” he wrote. “Few bad notes? Mheeeee that’s an open mic for you…”

Tyrese remained upbeat, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to perform. “God is the greatest, we live in the best [country] in the world and I really really tried… Teddy-Marvin-Donnie-Wonder-Gibson is my name… Smile… it’s a viiiiiiibbbbeeeee!!!!!!!” he added.

Homage to Marvin Gaye

The 45-year-old singer, known for hits like “Sweet Lady” and “Lately,” explained his decision to pay homage to Gaye in both his performance and appearance. Sporting a fringe vest, bell-bottom pants, and a wool cap reminiscent of Gaye’s style, Tyrese intended to honor the late legend. However, fans on social media had mixed reactions to his look, with some likening it to other celebrities and fictional characters.

Despite the criticisms, Tyrese focused on the positive outcome of the performance. According to the singer, the buzz surrounding his rendition led to an overwhelming response from fans, causing his website to crash due to pre-orders for his upcoming album, Beautiful Pain.

“My website crashed. I’m sorry, please go to Tyrese.Tv and try one more time to get onto the site. I’ve never had this many people on my side at one time,” Tyrese shared on Instagram. The album, which Tyrese has described as deeply personal and reflective of his own journey, is set to be released on August 30th.
