Trevor Noah surprised many fans when he announced that he’d be leaving The Daily Show almost two months ago and is now finally speaking his peace. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the comedian opens up about the shocking decision.

In the discussion, Noah revealed that he hadn’t planned to make his announcement live on-air, but he felt that doing so with the cast and crew around in that setting made the most sense to him. “Part of the reason I did it that way is because I didn’t want anybody to be the person who then tells somebody else, who then tells somebody else, who then tells somebody else,” he explained. “And this is where we create the thing. [The show] is where we’re together, our space, and so for me, it felt like the most natural way to tell everybody at the same time.”
Although his decision may have come as a surprise to many, the comedian knew that this day would come eventually.
“Maybe this comes with not being raised in America, but I believe that everything should end,” he mentions. “A lot of American business and American media is just like, ‘Keep it going as long as possible.’ But I think it’s healthy for things to end when they’re still in a good place. I want to leave before I’m burnt out, because there are many other things I’d like to do.”
Noah does hope to continue to work on The Daily Show in some form after his departure. The host’s final episode will be aired Thursday December 8th.
