Black Panther has been making history since its debut on February 2018.

During last night’s 2019 Academy Awards, Black Panther took home three awards. This was a major achievement for Marvel Studios, which had never won an Oscar before.

Ruth Carter accepted Marvel’s first Oscar for Best Costume Design in a Motion Picture. Carter, whose career stretches three decades, has also worked on Selma, Malcolm X and Amistad. Hannah Beachler followed with a win for Best Production Design. The third Oscar was for Best Original Score.

They became the first black women to win Oscars in their respective categories. They were also just the second and third black women to win an Academy Award for a nonacting category since 1983.

Both Ruth Carter and Hannah Beachler played key roles in making Black Panther into the billion dollar global phenomenon that it is today. Both were inspired by a broad mix of African cultures to create the vibrant and futuristic Wakandan atmosphere.

Carter said she hopes that her win can open doors for other African-Americans who want to follow her and Beachler’s footsteps.

Ryan Coogler was not nominated for Best Director, but received a lot of love from all Black Panther Oscar winners.
