SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 30: People look on during a vigil for Tyre Nichols at Regency Community Skatepark on January 30, 2023 in Sacramento, California. Earlier this month, 29-year-old Nichols was violently beaten for three minutes by Memphis police officers at a traffic stop and died of his injuries. Tyre Nichols is being laid to rest today after being fatally beaten by five Memphis Black police officers.

The funeral is set to have the Rev. Al Sharpton give the eulogy while Ben Crump, the family’s attorney will give the call for justice. It has been stated that Vice President Kamala Harris will also attend the service.

On January 7th, Nichols was pulled over in a traffic stop before he was beaten. The footage of the attack was released and was met with shock and disgust from many people including politicians and activists.

The five officers involved in the attack were immediately fired from Memphis Police Department and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, one count of official oppression, and two counts of official misconduct. They have since been released on bond.

An internal investigation is currently being conducted and the president of the Memphis sector of the NAACP said, “We believe others are involved and this information will likely come out in the investigation. There are some emergency medical technicians. There may be others.”
