Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani, known as Valentino, has died at the age of 93.

On Monday, Jan. 19, his foundation and his own @realmrvalentino account shared an Instagram post, that read, “Our founder, Valentino Garavani, passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones.” His cause of death was not given.

Valentino launched his namesake label in 1960 alongside longtime partner Giancarlo Giammetti, quickly becoming synonymous with timeless elegance and Hollywood glamour.

The designer was born on May 11, 1932, in Voghera, Italy, launched the fashion house, after studying couture in Milan and Paris. His Georgette fabrics, chiffon ruffles and ornate embellishments, including the exclusive budellini technique won him a multitude of awards, including France’s highest civilian distinction in 2006.

As one of the giants in fashion, his designs were worn on celebrities and well-known figures including Elizabeth Taylor, Nancy Reagan, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow. He also introduced a signature shade of crimson, with a hit of orange, known as “Valentino Red.”

His romantic designs, simple at first glance, were full of intricate detail. “I love beauty,” Valentino said. “It is not my fault. And I know what women want: they want to be beautiful.”

The designer, who also dressed Jackie Kennedy, sold his empire ahead of his retirement, in 2008.

“I have decided that this is the perfect moment to say adieu to the world of fashion,” he said at the time. “As the English say, I would like to leave the party when it is still full.”

His last catwalk show was held in January 2008 in Paris, a city he called his second home and which he said had taught him to love fashion and life.

Celebrities outpoured love and condolences to the famed designer and his family. “Thank you Mr. Valentino for inspiring so many to be beautiful,” brand ambassador Colman Domingo wrote on Instagram after hearing the news. “To quote: ‘There are only three things I can do − make a dress, decorate a house, and entertain people.’ This man lived a life to make beautiful things and to make us all feel like we are living in a fantasy that becomes one’s reality. I am most proud of my ambassadorship with @maisonvalentino because of his story. A life well lived.”
