J.R. Smith is preparing to reach a milestone far removed from his professional basketball career. The former NBA standout is set to graduate this spring from North Carolina A&T State University, marking a new chapter in his life.

Smith, a two-time NBA champion, enrolled at the historically Black university in 2021 after retiring from professional basketball. His return to the classroom drew national attention, as he transitioned from athlete to student.

From NBA Champion to College Graduate

Smith built a long career in the NBA, playing for several teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers. He won championships in 2016 and 2020. His decision to pursue higher education came years after he skipped college to enter the league directly from high school.

At North Carolina A&T, Smith joined the Aggies golf program and embraced student life. The NCAA ruled him eligible to compete, allowing him to balance athletics with academics.

“It was probably one of the most exciting feelings I’ve had in a while,” Smith said of becoming a student-athlete.

University officials and supporters have highlighted his journey as an example of perseverance and growth. The institution, located in Greensboro, is the largest historically Black college or university in the United States.

A Nontraditional Path to Achievement

Smith’s academic journey has unfolded later than most students. He enrolled at age 36, bringing a different perspective to campus life. His experience has been featured in media projects documenting his adjustment to college.

The university has emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, a message Smith’s story reinforces. His expected graduation represents both personal achievement and a broader statement about second chances.

Social media posts and public reactions have celebrated the milestone, noting the significance of completing a degree after a successful sports career.

Smith’s path reflects a growing trend of athletes returning to education after their playing careers end. His journey also underscores the role historically Black colleges continue to play in shaping diverse student experiences.
