LeBron James is heading back to the Eastern Conference after revealing the Philadelphia 76ers will be the final team of his historic NBA career.
The four-time NBA champion announced Friday that he plans to sign with Philadelphia after spending the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. James also disclosed that retirement was a serious possibility before ultimately deciding he still had another championship pursuit left in him.
The decision ends weeks of speculation surrounding the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Several contenders reportedly emerged as possibilities after James declined to immediately announce his plans following the conclusion of last season.
Instead of walking away from basketball, the 41-year-old chose one final challenge.
“I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game,” James wrote. “I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.”
A Final Championship Pursuit
James described the past several weeks as a period of reflection unlike any other in his career.
He said the time away from competition allowed him to consider what continues to motivate him after more than two decades in the league.
“The last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out,” James wrote.
He then explained why another season made sense.
“This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”
James’ comments marked a notable shift from previous stages of his career. Earlier decisions often centered on family considerations or long-term planning. This announcement focused almost entirely on his competitive drive.
The move also comes after Philadelphia reshaped its roster during the offseason. The 76ers now feature a veteran core that includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, giving James another opportunity to compete for an NBA title.
Thanking His Former Teams
James made clear that his decision does not diminish the relationships he built throughout his career.
He thanked Los Angeles, where he won the 2020 NBA championship and played eight seasons. He also acknowledged his years with the Miami Heat and his hometown ties to northeast Ohio.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” James wrote. “Thank you LA. Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always home!”
Philadelphia has not captured an NBA championship since 1983. James now arrives with the expectation that his experience and postseason résumé can help change that.
His announcement immediately became one of the biggest stories of the NBA offseason. Fans flooded social media with reactions as the league’s all-time scoring leader confirmed what he called his “last decision.”
If James remains committed to his plan, the 2026-27 season will begin the final chapter of one of basketball’s most accomplished careers. Instead of retiring, he has chosen one more opportunity to chase another title, this time in a Philadelphia uniform.
