Lizzo is embracing another chapter in her wellness journey with the same candor that has defined her career.

The Grammy-winning singer recently revealed she has gained 20 pounds since last year. She also stressed that weight fluctuations are a normal part of life. Her comments came during a new interview with The Guardian, where she reflected on health, public scrutiny and body image.

The singer said she reached a personal weight goal in early 2025. Since then, however, her body has naturally changed.

“I’ve gained 20 pounds since last year, so everyone can ask me about weight gain, too, if they’d like,” Lizzo said.

Rather than expressing concern, the singer presented the change as part of an ongoing process. She explained that her body has fluctuated throughout her life. She also emphasized that her health journey has never been about reaching one permanent number.

Health Journey Goes Beyond the Scale

Lizzo said people often reduce her transformation to a single explanation. She believes the reality is much more complicated.

“There are a lot of reasons. People always want to make it one single headline, one single thing. A lot of things can be true at once,” she said.

The performer explained that physical discomfort first motivated her to make lifestyle changes. She recalled dealing with joint pain and body aches before shifting her focus toward healthier routines.

“I was in a place where my physical weight was causing joint pain and aches,” Lizzo said.

She also described stepping away from social media during that period. She said the break allowed her to focus on music and aspects of life she could control.

“I also got to the point where I came off the internet, and all I had was the studio and my thoughts, so I poured myself into the things I could control. My body, my lifestyle, my routines and habits … and this is who I am today,” she said.

Lizzo has consistently rejected speculation surrounding her appearance. She has repeatedly said her choices are rooted in personal health rather than public expectations.

Her latest comments continue that message. Instead of celebrating weight loss or criticizing weight gain, she framed both as ordinary experiences.

Calling Out Unrealistic Beauty Standards

The singer also used the interview to criticize the intense scrutiny women face over their bodies.

“There’s a system of oppression that is constantly putting pressure on, especially women and especially women in the spotlight,” Lizzo said.

“That system is unrelenting and it is determined to make you feel shit about yourself. It won’t stop until you’ve bought every product and you’ve bought into every lie and turned it in on yourself.”

Lizzo argued that criticism should be directed toward the culture fueling unrealistic beauty standards instead of individuals experiencing them.

“We need to criticize the system and the mediums that are doing this and not the people it’s affecting because those people are human beings having a human experience,” she said. “We should have grace and love and support for them.”

The interview arrives as Lizzo continues promoting her latest music while rebuilding her public profile following a challenging period that included legal disputes with former dancers. She has denied the allegations against her, and portions of the litigation remain ongoing.

Throughout the past several years, Lizzo has remained vocal about self-acceptance, even as her own body has changed. Her newest remarks reinforce that message. She continues to argue that wellness cannot be measured by a single number on a scale.

Instead, Lizzo says her evolving health journey reflects a broader commitment to caring for herself while resisting the unrealistic expectations often placed on women in the public eye.
