Rapper Mystikal was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced rape charge stemming from a 2022 assault case in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. The sentence closes a criminal case that kept the New Orleans-born artist behind bars without bond for nearly four years while awaiting trial.

Mystikal, whose legal name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, pleaded guilty in March to one count of third-degree rape. The plea agreement reduced an original first-degree rape charge that carried the possibility of a mandatory life sentence if convicted. Prosecutors also dropped several related charges as part of the deal.

Judge Steven Tureau imposed the maximum sentence allowed under the plea agreement after hearing emotional statements from the victim and arguments from both sides. The victim described a violent encounter that she said left lasting physical and emotional scars.

During the hearing, the victim recounted allegations that Tyler punched, choked and sexually assaulted her inside his Prairieville home. She urged the court to impose the harshest sentence available. According to courtroom reports, Tyler responded to her testimony by stating, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence.”

The case began in July 2022 when authorities responded to a hospital report involving an alleged sexual assault. Investigators said the woman suffered visible injuries and identified Tyler as the suspect. He was arrested and later charged with rape and several other offenses.

Tyler initially pleaded not guilty and maintained his innocence for years. However, in March 2026, he entered a guilty plea to third-degree rape in a move that significantly reduced his potential prison exposure. The agreement capped any sentence at 20 years.

Days before sentencing, Tyler attempted to withdraw his guilty plea. His attorneys argued that he had been under significant emotional distress and did not fully understand the consequences of the agreement. The court denied that request and allowed sentencing to proceed.

The latest conviction adds to a lengthy legal history that has repeatedly interrupted Tyler’s music career. In 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery and extortion charges in a separate case. He served approximately six years in prison and became a registered sex offender.

Tyler later faced rape and kidnapping allegations connected to another case, though those charges were eventually dismissed. The 2022 case marked his return to court on serious felony accusations.

Once one of Southern hip-hop’s most recognizable voices, Mystikal rose to prominence through hits including “Shake Ya Ass” and “Danger.” His commercial success peaked in the early 2000s, earning Grammy recognition and mainstream radio exposure. In recent years, however, legal issues largely overshadowed his musical legacy.

With Tuesday’s ruling, Tyler begins serving a sentence that could keep him incarcerated well into his 70s, bringing one of Louisiana’s highest-profile criminal cases involving a music artist to a close.
