The iconic theme song of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air wasn’t always the catchy tune fans sing along to today. According to Will Smith, the original theme proposed by legendary producer Quincy Jones didn’t hit the right note—literally. On the Dec. 2 episode of VICE’s docuseries Black Comedy in America, Smith revealed that Jones once described his own initial version as a “piece of s—.”

A “Fresh” Take Wins the Day

Smith, 56, recounted how Jones, the renowned producer behind Thriller and the Sanford and Son theme, initially composed a theme for the sitcom. Despite Jones’ unparalleled track record, Smith wasn’t impressed. “Quincy presented a theme song,” Smith explained, “but I hated it. What was I supposed to say? It was Quincy Jones.”

Uncertain how to express his misgivings, Smith sought advice from DJ Jazzy Jeff, his longtime collaborator. Jeff suggested they create their own demo to better match the show’s vibe. In a hotel room, they wrote and recorded what would become the iconic rap detailing the series’ premise. “We just told the story of the show,” Smith said.

When they presented the demo to Jones, his reaction surprised them. “He said, ‘That’s good. Mine’s a piece of s—,’” Smith recalled. Jones agreed their version was more fitting, calling it “what it needs to be.”

A Mentorship That Changed Everything

Jones played an instrumental role in shaping The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It was at his house party in 1989 that Smith auditioned for NBC executives. Though initially hesitant, Smith was pushed by Jones to perform on the spot. “He told me, ‘Everyone who needs to say yes is in that room. Go do it now,’” Smith said.

Their collaboration left a lasting impression. Reflecting on Jones’ passing last month at age 91, Smith paid a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. “Quincy Jones is the true definition of a mentor, a father, and a friend,” Smith wrote. “He nurtured me, inspired me, and let me use his wings until mine were strong enough to fly.”

From skepticism to success, Jones’ influence and Smith’s creativity birthed one of television’s most memorable theme songs.
