Russell Wilson is sharing new details about the moment he realized Ciara was the woman he would eventually marry.
During a recent appearance on Keke Palmer’s podcast, “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer,” the NFL quarterback reflected on the early days of his relationship with the Grammy-winning singer. Wilson revealed that he felt a strong sense of certainty from the start and even believed they would meet before their paths officially crossed.
When Palmer asked how he knew Ciara was “the one,” Wilson didn’t hesitate.
“I knew exactly when I met her, she was the one,” he said.
Palmer noted that his description sounded like a version of love at first sight. Wilson agreed.
“It really was,” he said.
A Vision Before They Met
Wilson explained that his confidence began before he ever met Ciara in person. He recalled a conversation with someone who asked him who he could see himself with in the future.
“Somebody asked me, who do you see yourself with?” Wilson said. “And I was like, I don’t know. And I was like, Ciara.”
The response surprised the other person.
“They were like, ‘She go like you?’ I said, ‘Why not? I’m sure she’ll like you.’ I said, ‘She ain’t met me yet.’”
At the time, Wilson said he was focused on his career and not actively pursuing a serious relationship. However, a conversation with his pastor would soon reshape his perspective.
After attending church one Sunday, Wilson said he began thinking seriously about marriage and what qualities he wanted in a future partner.
“I need to write my five non-negotiables,” he recalled telling his pastor.
Wilson said the list included a woman of faith, someone who was faithful in all aspects of life, independent, nurturing and capable of commanding a room with her presence.
“I wanted a woman of faith, right, who believe in God,” Wilson said. “I want a woman who is faithful, not just to me, but to everything she does.”
He continued, “I want a woman who is independent. Didn’t have to be Ciara, but somebody had her own identity and wasn’t just Russell’s wife.”
Wilson also said he wanted someone who reflected qualities he admired in his mother and someone who could make an impact wherever she went.
“I wanted somebody that would tilt the room. When they walk in the room, the whole room changes.”
Meeting Ciara Three Days Later
Wilson said he wrote down the five qualities and prayed over them with his pastor.
“He said, ‘Why five?’ I said, ‘Five is the number of grace,’” Wilson recalled. “I said marriage and life is by grace.”
According to Wilson, something remarkable happened shortly afterward.
“We wrote five of them down. And three days later, I meet Ciara the first time.”
The couple met in 2015 and quickly formed a connection. Wilson said there was an immediate bond between them that continued to grow over the following months.
“The moment I met her, what was interesting is, the future is about nine months or so, and we just, it was just a bond right from the beginning,” he said.
Wilson also revealed a promise he made early in their relationship regarding Ciara’s son, Future Zahir.
“And I told her, I said, ‘No matter if you and I ever end up together, I’m going to make sure I look out for little man and help whatever way you need.’”
Even then, Wilson sensed the relationship would become something significant.
“But I knew it was gonna be like something real,” he said.
Looking back, Wilson described relationships and life experiences as part of a larger journey.
“I think life is a journey, right?” he said. “You meet people along the way, you go through relationships, situations, and that. And I think it’s all a formulation of the imperfect ingredients of what God desires for you.”
Wilson and Ciara married in 2016 and have since become one of entertainment and sports’ most recognizable couples. Nearly a decade later, Wilson’s certainty about their future together remains one of the defining memories of their love story.
“And at some point we realize, okay, well, God, what do you really have for me?” Wilson said.
