Ryan Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, is proving to be a breakout hit at the box office, earning a remarkable $61 million globally during its opening weekend. The film pulled in $45.6 million domestically, claiming the top spot and dethroning The Minecraft Movie, which had led the previous week.

The film marks a bold return to theaters for Coogler, best known for Black Panther and Creed. But this time, he steps into the horror genre with an original concept that mixes Southern Gothic themes, historical trauma, and supernatural storytelling. “I wanted to explore the intersection of Black culture, music, and supernatural folklore in a way that feels both authentic and thrilling,” Coogler said in a recent interview.

A Story Rooted in History and Horror

Sinners takes place in 1932 Mississippi, following twin brothers Elijah and Elias Moore—both played by Michael B. Jordan—as they attempt to rebuild their lives by opening a juke joint. Their dream, however, is quickly haunted by a dark, ancient force that targets not only them but their entire community.

The film has been praised for its historical depth and genre-blending originality. “This isn’t just a horror film,” said film critic Lena Morales. “It’s a deeply layered story about legacy, identity, and survival, told through the lens of folklore and fear.”

Ludwig Göransson, who composed the score, brought a powerful musical element to the narrative by collaborating with real blues musicians. “The music had to be a character in itself,” Göransson explained. “It helps transport viewers back in time and intensifies the emotions in every scene.”

Strong Start Signals Audience Demand for Originals

Critics and audiences alike have responded positively. The film currently holds a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and received an “A” grade from CinemaScore—a rare feat for a horror release.

Warner Bros. expressed confidence in the film’s staying power, especially with a relatively open window before major competition arrives. Industry analysts are already pointing to Sinners as a major win for original storytelling.

“This film proves audiences still want to see new, bold ideas on the big screen,” said Warner Bros. executive Sofia Grant. “It’s a strong signal to creators and studios alike.”
