Southwest Airlines has announced that they will no longer allow free checked bags for their passengers.

According to reports, the airlines revealed on Tuesday that it would start charging their customers for checked bags as a way for the company to boost its earnings. This change comes after the Texas-based company announced that they were ending their open seating, which has been a staple of the brand for more than 50 years.

The “bags fly free” policy has been another staple of the airlines for years, and it is the only major U.S. airline that allows their customers to check two bags for free. The policy has set the, a part from rival companies.

The new policy will go into effect on May 28th, 2025, and it will change the lack of earnings that the company has been getting. Southwest Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will not be affected by this change.

However, A-List Members and select customers will get one free checked bag, and Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders will receive credit for one checked bag. The airline is also adjusting its loyalty program, which will offer more points for lower-tier tickets.
