Tom Holland says a playful comment from Zendaya helped shape one of the biggest career decisions of his life.
The actor recently revealed that he nearly passed on Christopher Nolan’s epic film The Odyssey because of a scheduling conflict with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. A joking ultimatum from Zendaya ultimately convinced him to make the leap.
Holland shared the story during a conversation with Nolan and co-stars Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway while promoting the film.
“To be honest, when I got home after our meeting, I sat down with Z and was like, ‘I’ve been offered this movie,’” Holland said.
“And she was like, ‘By who?’”
“And I was like, ‘It’s the big one.’”
“And she was like, ‘Chris?’”
“I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s Chris Nolan.’”
The decision was not as simple as accepting the offer. Production for Spider-Man: Brand New Day initially overlapped with the planned start of The Odyssey. Holland faced choosing between two major studio projects.
That is when Zendaya delivered the remark that drew laughter from everyone in the room.
“Z said, ‘I’ll leave you if you don’t do The Odyssey.’” Holland recalled.
Director Christopher Nolan laughed before responding, “Yes. Well, thank you to her.”
“Here I am,” Holland added.
A Scheduling Puzzle Becomes a Career Opportunity
Holland explained that accepting Nolan’s film required difficult conversations with Sony Pictures. The actor needed the studio to adjust the production schedule for the next Spider-Man installment. According to Holland, those discussions ultimately worked in his favor. The schedule shifted enough for him to appear in both blockbuster films.
Holland portrays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, and Zendaya appears as Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom.
The casting also marked another professional milestone for the couple. Although they have appeared together in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, The Odyssey allowed them to reunite under Nolan’s direction.
Zendaya previously shared that working with the Oscar-winning filmmaker had been a longtime dream. She has called Interstellar her favorite Nolan film and admitted she tried to contain her excitement while filming.
Another Chapter for Hollywood’s High-Profile Couple
Holland and Zendaya have become one of Hollywood’s most closely followed couples. Their relationship has frequently blended personal support with professional collaboration.
Holland recently revealed that he also played a role in Zendaya joining The Odyssey.
After meeting with Nolan, the actor returned home and encouraged Zendaya to revisit the screenplay. He hinted that she should read it again with Athena in mind before she officially learned about the offer.
Rather than serious pressure, Holland described Zendaya’s comment as playful encouragement during a difficult decision.
The gamble appears to have paid off.
With Sony adjusting production dates, Holland secured a leading role in one of Nolan’s most anticipated films while still returning as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day,
The Odyssey opens in theaters on July 17, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day scheduled to follow later this month. The back-to-back releases position Holland and Zendaya for another high-profile summer at the box office, this time balancing Marvel spectacle with an ambitious retelling of one of literature’s oldest adventures.
